Bin Enclosure Width Calculator

Find the internal width for bins placed side by side

How to size the inside width of a bin enclosure

This bin enclosure calculator estimates the clear internal width needed for equal-width bins placed side by side · It uses one clearance value for both outside edges and every space between bins · The result is not the finished outside width of the enclosure

What to measure and enter

Measure one bin at its widest point, including wheels, handles and any parts that project beyond the body · Enter this width, the number of bins and the clearance you want at each side and between them · Metric inputs use centimetres and imperial inputs use inches

If bin widths differ, using the widest bin for every position gives a conservative estimate · For a closer fit, add the individual measured widths and the required gaps separately · The calculator itself assumes equal widths

Formula and worked examples

Number of clearances = number of bins + 1
Internal width = bin width × number of bins + clearance × number of clearances

Three bins measuring 60 cm wide with 5 cm clearance need 3 × 60 + 4 × 5 = 200 cm of internal width · There are two gaps between bins and one at each outside edge

For an imperial example, three 24 in bins with 2 in clearance need 3 × 24 + 4 × 2 = 80 in of internal width

What to allow for beyond this result

Add wall and frame thickness to determine outside width · Allow separately for internal partitions, door posts, hinges, door openings, depth and height · Check that each bin can roll out and its lid can open through its full movement · The entered clearance is your design choice, not a verified minimum for every bin

When checking the width of cladding or screening boards, use the board spacing calculator with the actual available opening

Assumes equal-width bins, no internal partitions, and the same gap at each side and between bins

How the estimate works

Internal width = bin width × bin count + clearance × (bin count + 1)

Measure wheels and handles as well as the bin body, then allow separately for framing, doors, partitions, depth and lid movement
