How to calculate how much mulch you need

This mulch calculator estimates whole bags to buy or an equivalent bulk volume for garden beds · Enter each bed’s shape, dimensions and the depth of new mulch you want to add · It can also compare bagged and bulk material costs using your own prices

Measure your beds and choose a bag size

Use length and width for a rectangular bed, or the diameter across the centre for a circular bed · Add separate areas when beds have different shapes or depths · For an irregular bed, divide it into simple areas without counting the same ground twice

Enter only the new layer you plan to spread · Existing mulch is not automatically subtracted · Select metric or imperial and follow the units beside each dimension · Bag size means the volume printed on the bag, in litres or cubic feet, not its weight

Volume and bag-count formulas

Rectangle area = length × width
Circle area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²
Mulch volume = sum of each bed’s area × its new-layer depth
Order volume = mulch volume × (1 + extra allowance ÷ 100)
Bags to buy = order volume ÷ bag volume, rounded up to whole bags

The calculator converts measurements to matching units first · Bulk results use cubic metres or cubic yards · One cubic metre is 1,000 litres · One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet · The entered allowance is the only extra material added

Worked examples in metric and imperial

A 4 × 2 m bed with 5 cm of new mulch needs 4 × 2 × 0.05 = 0.4 m³ · With 10% extra, the order volume is 0.44 m³ or 440 litres · Using 50-litre bags gives 440 ÷ 50 = 8.8, rounded up to 9 bags

A 10 × 6 ft bed with a 3 in layer needs 15 ft³ · With 10% extra that is 16.5 ft³ · Using 2 ft³ bags gives 8.25, rounded up to 9 bags, or about 0.61 yd³ in bulk

Compare bagged and bulk cost

Bagged cost = whole bags to buy × price per bag · Bulk cost = order volume × price per selected volume unit · Bag rounding can leave some material over · The estimates exclude delivery and tax, so compare the full supplier quotes before buying

The tool estimates quantity from your chosen depth · It does not decide which mulch type or depth is suitable for your plants, and it does not automatically model settling

A little help

How many bags of mulch do I need?

Divide your total volume, including the chosen allowance, by the volume printed on the bag – we round up to whole bags so the bags cover the calculated amount

Can I add several garden beds?

Yes – choose Add another area and enter each bed separately, including its own depth – all areas contribute to the total

Does the calculator include existing mulch?

Enter only the depth of fresh mulch you need to add – the calculator does not subtract an existing layer automatically
